Swallow (2019) is a psychological thriller about Hunter, a pregnant housewife who starts eating dangerous stuff because she has pica. As she keeps it a secret, her life, which already feels super controlled and suffocating, starts falling apart.
The movie looks at themes like owning your body, keeping feelings bottled up, and past trauma, and it does so in a way that makes you really uncomfortable. Haley Bennett is great in the lead role, and the simple way the movie is made builds up tension with quiet moments and symbols. Swallow is disturbing but also a really human look at one person’s struggle.
